Installation and Repairs

Work can range from replacing individual damaged posts or panels to installing a complete new boundary. The construction method depends on the fence type, existing foundations, ground conditions and agreed materials; not every installation requires the same post system or concrete specification.

Depending on the site and requirements, available fencing options can include:

Standard timber panels: Replacement or new installation using suitable timber or concrete posts.
Concrete posts and gravel boards: A practical option where the site, access and customer preference make the system appropriate.
Timber posts and gravel boards: Suitable for selected panel or traditional timber fencing installations.
Featheredge or closeboard fencing: Traditional fencing constructed on site to suit the particular boundary.
Hazel fencing: A natural-looking option for suitable gardens and planting areas.
Deer fencing: Mesh fencing for protecting larger gardens, boundaries or vulnerable planting where the required height and site make installation practical.
Rabbit fencing: Lower-level mesh fencing designed to reduce rabbit access to vegetable plots, beds or selected garden areas.

Clear Quotations and Terms

Fencing is normally quoted as a complete job after the boundary has been inspected and measured. The quotation will identify the agreed materials, labour, access assumptions and waste arrangements. A deposit may be required before materials are ordered, with the payment stages confirmed in writing.

Removal of old fencing is not automatic and will be included only where it has been assessed and separately allowed for in the quotation.

How a Fencing Enquiry Is Assessed

Step 1: Site Assessment and Requirements

I inspect and measure the proposed boundary, check access and visible ground conditions, and discuss the required height, appearance and construction. The customer should confirm ownership of the boundary and any relevant restrictions before work is authorised.

Photographs and approximate measurements are useful for an initial enquiry, but a site visit may be required before a reliable quotation can be provided.

Step 2: Materials and Installation

Once the quotation and any required deposit have been agreed, the specified materials are ordered. Installation is carried out using the construction method appropriate to the chosen fence, existing boundary and site conditions.

Step 3: Completion and Waste Arrangements

The completed work is checked against the agreed scope. Reusable or customer-retained materials are left as agreed, while removal of old fencing and excavated material is handled only where it is included in the quotation.

These are some of the practical questions customers ask when considering fencing repairs or replacement.

How much does garden fencing cost?

The cost depends on the fence type, height and length, the post and gravel-board system, access, ground conditions, materials and waste arrangements. After assessment, I provide a written quotation explaining what is included. Unforeseen concealed ground conditions may need to be discussed if they could not reasonably be identified beforehand.

Do I need planning permission for a new fence?

Many domestic fences in England fall within permitted-development limits. As a general guide, a fence next to a highway used by vehicles—or its footpath—should not exceed one metre without planning permission; elsewhere the usual limit is two metres. Different restrictions can apply to listed buildings, conservation areas, planning conditions and Article 4 areas. The property owner is responsible for checking the position with the local planning authority before work begins.

What happens to my old fence?

Old fencing can be retained by the customer or removed where this has been assessed and included in the quotation. The volume, materials, access and disposal requirements affect the cost, so removal is not assumed automatically.

How long does a fencing job take?

The timescale depends on the length and construction, access, ground conditions, removal of the existing fence, material availability and weather. A smaller repair may take part of a booking, while a complete boundary can take several days. An estimated duration will be provided with the quotation.

Can you repair a fence instead of replacing it?

Sometimes. Individual posts, gravel boards, panels, rails or shorter sections may be replaceable if the remaining structure is sound. Where deterioration is widespread, partial repair may offer poor value compared with planned replacement.

What fencing systems do you install?

Depending on the site and requirements, I can install standard timber panels, timber or concrete posts, gravel boards, hand-built featheredge or closeboard fencing, picket fencing, suitable traditional materials such as hazel fencing, and mesh systems including deer and rabbit fencing. Material availability, access, required height and site suitability are confirmed during the quotation.

Will deer or rabbit fencing completely prevent access?

Mesh fencing can significantly reduce animal access when it is correctly specified and installed, but the result depends on the complete boundary, gates, ground levels and adjoining areas. I assess the practical weak points before recommending a system and do not describe an installation as completely animal-proof.

Who is responsible for the boundary?

The customer should confirm ownership of the boundary and obtain any necessary agreement from neighbours, landlords or other interested parties before authorising work. Steve’s Garden Services cannot determine legal boundary ownership.
